The role of extracellular matrix in restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention

Abstract

Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) might be a kind of wound healing reaction, involving at least two important processes, vascular remodeling and neointima formation. There is an accumulating amount of evidence to suggest that the dynamic modulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) contributes significantly to restenosis by interacting with cells and matrices. In this brief review, the expression pattern of ECM and the possible role of these molecules in the restenosis process are discussed.
