Abstract

Reduction and oxidation of semiquinone radicals Q̇- are facilitated by the ZnII center of the imidazolate-bridged heterodinuclear CuII - ZnII complex [CuZn(bdpi)(CH3CN)2](ClO4)3 · 2CH3CN (1; see picture for formula of bdpi). The stoichiometric disproportionation of Q̇- involves coordiantion of Q̇- to the ZnII center of 1; no disproportionation of Q̇- occurs with the CuII-CuII analogue of 1. These studies provide mechanistic insight into the role of the ZnII ion in copper-zinc superoxide dismutase.
