Abstract
High-strength concrete (HSC) is finding increasing application in buildings, where structural fire safety is one of the primary design considerations. Generally, HSC does not exhibit the same level of performance as that of normal strength concrete (NSC) in fire due to further degradation of strength and the occurrence of fire-induced spalling. This paper discusses the performance of HSC under fire hazard. A comparison is made of the fire resistance performance of a HSC column with that of a NSC column. The critical factors that influence the structural behaviour of HSC columns under fire conditions are discussed. Data from experimental and numerical studies are used to illustrate the influence of fire, material and structural parameters on the fire performance of HSC columns. Finally, practical strategies are presented for mitigating spalling and enhancing fire endurance of HSC columns.
