Abstract

Laser pulse irradiation of a deaerated aqueous solution containing the solid state lithium ion-encapsulated fullerene resulted in the formation of highly dispersed nano-aggregates (Li⁺@C₆₀)_n. Photoirradiation of an O₂-saturated D₂O solution containing (Li⁺@C₆₀)_n gave singlet oxygen with 55% quantum yield, leading to efficient double-stranded DNA cleavage.
