Abstract

It is argued, and supported by microscopic calculation, that the correlations responsible for the fractional quantum Hall effect vanish near the edge of a fractional Hall system, implying, in principle, an intrinsic correction to the Hall quantization. The electron density in the uncorrelated region, however, is determined to be too small to have a measurable effect.
