Abstract

Hyperoxide ion (O2) is formed when calcium oxide prepared from CaCO3 is exposed to oxygen at room temperature. The use of 17O2 revealed that the two oxygen atoms bear the equal spin density, indicating the side-on type adsorption of O2 ion. The conditions for O2 ion formation have been specified.
