Abstract

Hyperoxide ion (O⁻₂) is formed when calcium oxide prepared from CaCO₃ is exposed to oxygen at room temperature. The use of ¹⁷O₂ revealed that the two oxygen atoms bear the equal spin density, indicating the side-on type adsorption of O⁻₂ ion. The conditions for O⁻₂ ion formation have been specified.
