Abstract

Nanowire heterostructures offer many functional advantages over planar systems. In this chapter, we review some of the most popular synthesis methods for axial, radial, and branched nanowire heterostructures, followed by a survey of their use in optoelectronic and spintronic applications. Hybrid schemes involving metals or dielectric for enhancing the optoelectronic figures of merit are also explored in a limited context. We conclude the chapter with a discussion on future issues that remain to be investigated.
