Abstract

Nanowire heterostructures offer many functional advantages over planar systems. In this chapter we review the most popular synthesis methods for axial and radial nanowire heterostructures, followed by a survey of their use in optoelectronic and spintronic applications. Hybrid schemes involving metals or dielectric materials for enhancing optoelectronic characteristics of merit also are explored in a limited context. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of future issues that remain to be investigated.
