Abstract

Results from experimental and theoretical studies indicate that fire resistance, in the practical region, can be obtained for hollow structural steel columns filled with three types of concrete-filling: plain concrete, bar-reinforced concrete and steel fibre-reinforced concrete. Case studies illustrating the use of concrete-filling, as a means of providing fire protection, to hollow steel columns are presented for the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington, and a school building in Hamilton, Ontario.
