Abstract
This study investigates the impact of active observation mode in an asynchronous virtual classroom. Active observation, operationally defined as observing the learning activities of oneself or other learners, was compared to the modes suggested from ICAP framework. It was found that high-performing learners engaged more frequently in monitoring oneself and other’s activities (active observation), while low-performing learners engaged more frequently in simply watching video lectures (Passive mode of ICAP framework).
