Abstract

We have accomplished the effective signal amplification of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) by electrokinetics-based sample enrichments. This signal amplification provides a rapid and simple solution for label-free and sensitive biomolecular detection with limited amount of samples. Biomolecules can be concentrated onto SERS-active surface by applying an electric field. The SERS detection limits of adenine reduced 8 orders of magnitude (from 1 PM to 10 fM) within 5 minutes using an electrical field of 0.6 V/cm. The integrated microfluidic SERS with electrokinetics-based sample preconcentration method can be further utilized for label-free genomic, proteomic, forensic, diagnostic, water, and environmental monitoring applications.
