Abstract

The effect of oryung-san (OS), a Korean traditional diuretic, on the renal excretion of intravenous cefazolin (CEZ) was investigated in rats. In OS-pre-treated rats, the cumulative 6-hr urinary excretion of cefazolin was significantly greater (4460 versus 3340 μg) and renal clearance was significantly faster (7.74 versus 4.90 ml/min/kg). This could be due to increase in unbound fraction of cefazolin in plasma and significant increase in cumulative 6-hr urine output (6.20 versus 3.96 ml) in OS-pretreated rats.
