Abstract

Coalescence reactions of C60 molecules during the laser desorption from fullerene thin films have been investigated using nanosecond and picosecond laser pulses in order to directly identify the primary reaction steps. Reflectron time-of-flight (RETOF) mass spectroscopy was used to obtain the mass and velocity distribu3 tions of the desorbed ions. The coalescence products are seen to be formed predominantly in collisions between fragment ions and C60.
