Abstract

Catalysis in electron transfer reactions between electron donors and acceptors was investigated. Mechanistic insight was provided through examples of both thermal and photochemical reactions that involve metal ion-catalyzed electron transfer processes as the rate-determining steps. Quantitative measure of Lewis acidity of metal-ions was obtained from ESR spectra of superoxide-metal ion complexes. It was shown that the Lewis acidity of metal ions controlled the electron transfer step and the subsequent chemical step in the overall redox reactions.
