Abstract
This paper deals with selected artworks of Nam June Paik, and aims to show that his definition of music beyond the boundary of sonic media has laid the foundation for modern audiovisual art in the context of multimodality and synesthesia. Being considered to be closely associated with each other, multimodality and synesthesia can be distinguished in their relationship with auditory and visual elements as well as the methodology adopted for the creation of artworks. We explore the meaning of audiovisual art as “extended music” embodied through Paik's first solo exhibition, review the exhibition from a fresh viewpoint based on the concept of multimodality and synesthesia, and analyze how they can be applied to the creation of audiovisual art. Finally, we conclude that Paik's audiovisual artworks, based on their openness and flexibility in materials for music, still inspire us with creative and experimental ideas both artistically and technically.
