Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-determination experiences and support needs of individuals with physical and multiple disabilities during the transition to adulthood. Method Individual interviews were conducted with four individuals with physical and multiple disabilities who graduated from schools less than five years ago, four parents, and three teachers who have supported their transition to adulthood. Results Two main themes and six sub-themes emerged. The main themes are (a) the difference between perception and reality regarding self-determination of individuals with physical and multiple disabilities during the transition to adulthood and (b) support needs for ensuring self-determination during the transition to adulthood for individuals with physical and multiple disabilities. Conclusion Individuals with physical and multiple disabilities had limited experiences of self-determination during the transition to adulthood. To address this issue, diverse support needs have been identified from individuals, caregivers, schools, and society.
