Abstract

This study examined the nutritional status of patients with chronic kidney disease and periodontal disease using the raw data from the 5th to 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (excluding unpublished data from 2011). A total of 1,396 subjects were categorized into four groups based on their periodontal disease status: Control group (n=339) with chronic kidney disease and no periodontal disease, PD1 group (n=171) with chronic kidney disease and a periodontal pocket depth of 4 mm or more, PD2 group (n=538) with chronic kidney disease and a dental surface recorded as caries-free, and the PD3 group (n=348) with PD1 and PD2. The proportion of subjects increased with age and body mass index, and differences in chewing problems and the risk of masticatory discomfort, carbohydrate intake ratio, and thiamine nutrition adequacy ratio were observed among the groups. The prevalence of chronic kidney disease and periodontal disease increases with age. Therefore, community public health measures such as dietary guidelines that can reduce malnutrition should be implemented.
