Abstract
Purpose Children with Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairments (CVI) are underrepresented in Korea’s special education field. This study explored the experiences and support needs of the six parents of children with severe and multiple disabilities including CVI. Method The researchers collected writings that six parents shared monthly in an online self-help group. Thirty posts were analyzed using the constant comparison method based on grounded theory. Findings The participants shared challenges in receiving medical diagnosis, and assessment, which led to difficulties in early intervention and finding professional special education resources. They relied on individual-based efforts both at home and in school settings to address children's visual needs. Successes and challenges in parenting were noted depending on identifying their child’s accomplishments. Discussion & Suggestion The researchers discussed the importance of identification and assessment of children with CVI considering their unique visual characteristics. It is recommended that professional experts and adapted learning materials specialized in CVI are needed to provide appropriate special education practices. Additional research using various qualitative methods is needed to further explore the experiences and support needs of parents and professionals supporting children with CVI.
